How are You Celebrating Earth Day, 22nd April 2011?

A Billion Acts of Green campaign is the largest environmental service campaign in the world. Steadily rising, with over 45 million acts to date, individuals, corporations, and governments our coming together in honor of our planet.

This campaign inspires and rewards all acts - whether small and simple or large and measurable. No matter the project, the goal is to reduce the impact on our planet and support a greener lifestyle.

This year's Earth Day goal is to register one billion actions of greeness in advance of the Earth Summit in Rio in 2012. Their website, EarthDay.org, tallies these acts with an online registration tool. You can submit them by going here

There are many elements to this year's Earth Day campaign highlighted on their website.

These include:

  • Athletes for the Earth: Bringing the voices of Olympic and professional athletes to the environmental movement
  • The Canopy Project: Supporting global reforestation
  • Green Schools: Greening America's Schools within a Generation
  • Women and Green Economy (WAGE): Engaging women leaders in the creation and development of a global green economy
  • Creating Climate Wealth: Convening 200 of the world's entrepreneurs to solve climate change and create a new green economy
  • Arts for the Earth: Celebrating the work of environmental artists in all media, and partnering with the American Association of Museums to bring sustainability to museums nationwide

Athletes for the Earth: This event brings together the voices of Olympic and professional athletes, providing tips and connecting activities to its impact on the environment.Participating athlete/celebrities include Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Demong, Olympic Bronze Medalist Andrew Weibrecht, World Champion Freeskier and founder of the Save Our Snow Foundation Alison Gannett, Boston Bruins Defenseman Andrew Ference, Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Aaron Peirsol, and NFL linebacker Dhani Jones.

The Canopy Project: In 2010, Earth Day Network planted over 1 million trees in sixteen countries under the Avatar Home Tree Initiative. This year, the Earth Day Network continues in the same effort, with another one million trees to be -planted again. They are seeking large-scale, sponsor-supported tree-planting projects in partnership with non-profit organizations all throughout the world. Focused on locations where reforestation is a priority, they are planting these trees in the likes Haiti, Brazil, Mexico and urban areas of the United States.

Women and the Green Economy (WAGE): The Earth Day Network is engaging women leaders to move forward and provide the creative power needed for a global post-carbon economy. Business, government and NGO leaders are apart of this ("Women and the Green Economy") campaign. Their goal is to create a policy agenda for Rio+20, along with national initiatives that will promote the green economy, secure educational and job training opportunities for women and channel green investment to benefit women.

Arts for the Earth: Arts for the Earth is an innovative education program developed to teach sustainability and environmental education through museum and arts community networks. Their goals include promoting the best practices in sustainability within the extensive arts and museum communities, working with arts and educator networks to develop creative lesson plans that deliver environmental education through the arts, and featuring artists who have incorporated environmental themes into their works.

With these initiatives and goals in mind, Earth Day 2011 is proving to be something oustanding. We want to know, how do you plan on getting involved?
