Tony Visits the Daintree Rainforest

3 March 2009

Recently I visited the amazing World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest. I was treated to a personal tour by Roger and John from the Australian Rainforest Foundation who actively work to conserve and regenerate one of the world's few surviving native rain forests. The Daintree is one of those places to visit before you die. Just fly into Cairns and see the nearby Great Barrier Reef as an added bonus! Email the guys at www.arf.net.au before you visit and they will ensure your visit is the trip of a lifetime.

GreenBizCheck uses the Australian Rainforest Foundation (www.arf.net.au) for all its carbon compensation activity.

Hi

I have just come back from the Daintree - is there any organisation that I contact directly that helps preserve the Daintree?

Cheers,

Miranda

PS keep up the good work

Many thanks for your comment John - he has just sent us the required link to contact the Prime Minister"

Each state government has a similar page. Simply go to say NSW parliament and this should take you to the parliamentary home page where the alphabetical list of members can be accessed. Usually if you are uncertain who your local member is there is a mechanism for finding that as well.

Below FYI is the email I just sent to the PM this morning.

Dear Prime Minister,

Recently the Indonesian government expressed a view that relations between our two countries have never been closer. I refer you to today's SMH World news story about Indonesia's imminent release of more native forest for logging.

With such warm feelings between our governments I urge you to send an unequivocal message of protest on behalf of the planet to the Indonesian government to not release these forests for logging. They must now become part of the global effort to begin the process of reversing Climate Change for all our sakes.

The Indonesian government is being squeezed by a small group of well-connected and insidious individuals who through their obsequious gift giving believe they are entitled to destroy whatever they like for a few shekels!

The government in Indonesia is of course so much a product of nepotism, cronyism and whatever 'isms you might care to conjure it is little wonder they on their own feel compelled to concede to these modern day robber barons.

But you can do something about it! While you or the Australian government may not actually be able to stop this move physically you have the ability to bring these actions to the fore in international political terms and there exists the very real opportunity to shame the Indonesians into reversing the decision to log.

As your government is collapsing in its position re carbon targets under an ugly lobby of our own lazy polluters, its seems only fair to ask the least your government could do is throw some heat on other countries who clearly see little value in saving the planet for our children's children or theirs.

This kind of behaviour flies in the face of all we know to be fact surrounding climate change and is exactly the kind of rogue behaviour Australia, amongst others, must take action to cease.

Will you please show some gumption and start to be the leader we need and the one I think you wish to be.

Kindest regards,

Not only is the Daintree an amazing place to visit it is a living reminder of how fragile and balalnced the planet is. I draw everyone's attention to the SMH of 6/3/09 and their World News article on the Indonesian government giving into special interests to yet again clear more native forests for logging. I urge everyone to write to your local and federal representatives and to the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Environment Minister, Peter Gareett DEMANDING they send a strong message of protest to the Indonesian government - (quick access to your reps. type in parliament of NSW or " " Australia and go to the members list aphabetically. It is listed by last names and one click will take you to their parliamentary page where you will finsd an e-mail link. Most of these aloow for up to 10,000 characters plenty of spcae to articulate your anger and expectations for action.) It is particularly apt as the Indonesians have recently commented that they believe the relationship between our two countires has never been closer. Who knows maybe someone will listen.

Yes, the Daintree is amazing. If more people visited it they would realize how important it is to regenerate the adjoing cane fields. This is especially important since rainforests in third world countries are disappearing by the second!
